  • Dressing Bad on Purpose?

I work remote and I try to get dressed up most days. Make up and a nice shirt. Mostly I do this just because I like to get dressed and feel put together. I've noticed everyone else on my team is usually in a hoodie or t-shirt, except the managers.
  • Well lately it feels like every side project has been delegated to me on top of my regular duties which have been increasing tenfold. It's really, really been weighing on my mental health. I've been trying to get a new job since I started a year ago and with this job market, I've been getting steady rejections. So I feel very stuck at a job I hate.
  • So basically has anyone noticed they get less work if they dress worse? I don't even like to dress bad, but I feel like I keep getting projects because I come dressed to work.
  • Commenters wondered if there might be more going on here.

Swimming_Skin_... nah mate the managers are probably just dumping extra work on you because you seem competent and willing, not because of your outfit they'll keep piling it on regardless of whether you're in a blazer or trackies
  • might be worth just saying no to some of those side projects instead of changing your whole vibe - "sorry, can't take that on with my current workload" works wonders →
  • abc-8517 OP Oh, I've done that too, it's just a bit much to handle my boss being p ed at me when I say no or that I have too much to do.

  • Square_Accountant969 Try" if I take this on I will need guidance on what your priorities are for my current workload so I can effectively reprioritize to include this new project" Its not tell him no but reminding him that you are one person and there is only so much you can do in a day so he needs to tell you what he wants first. If everything is urgent then nothing is urgent. Also if everything is always urgent then a conversation about when projects are handed down to you should be had.
  • anneofred Let him know you have coworkers that haven't been given as much work and you're sure they could probably manage it. If he gets mad then ask why the work is mainly being piled on you when there are others working there...then just wait for the answer. If he doesn't have one then say "I'm happy to do the work given to me but there needs to be even distribution so I don't burn out or fall behind."
  • StolenWishes it's just a bit much to handle my boss being р ed at me when I say no or that I have too much to do. Would you rather handle your boss being p you, or handle an ever increasing workload? - Dressing down might help but it won't be a magic wand. ed at
  • Sophie_Doodie No, dressing better isn't why you're getting more work. You're getting more work because you're reliable and look like you have it together, so you're the easy choice. Managers don't assign projects based on
  • hoodies vs nice shirts, they assign them to the person who gets things done without drama. Dressing worse won't fix it, you'd just be the same reliable person in a hoodie. The real issue is boundaries, not appearance.
  • anonymous07865 If you have time to dress up you have time for more work -Your Boss probably
  • bgei952 Work slower.
  • attanoon Ask for a raise, it seems like you're the only competent one there. And if they say no, keep looking for another job.
  • MalsWidow Your outfit, especially when viewed alongside the rest of your team, screams effort and initiative. You not only appear to have your sh together, you give the impression of someone who wants more. The boss is
  • probably hoisting his work onto you thinking you want to be a team player in hopes of advancing and is getting ped when you set boundaries. He has come to rely on you so he doesnt have to put in real effort.
  • If you don't want to change your outfit, don't. It sks. that you're in a position where your boss is doing this to you, but until you find a way out, you have to set and stick to boundaries. I would also start a paper trail. If your boss comes to you with work you can't take on, after the verbal conversation, send a follow up email.
  • "Dear Manager, Per our conversation at : on //xxxx, I must decline the opportunity to work on Project XYZ due to (list out current work and due dates). While I understand the importance of said project, I am at my capacity. When Project XY and Project Y, complete, I will be happy to take on an additional project. Sincerely, OP."
